By Jose Verduzco, Golf Course Superintendent My staff and I are excited to start the 2019/2020 season as we worked through a long, intensive summer. We will also continue to improve the golf course for our guests in the fall, winter and spring. We, the grounds crew, would like to encourage members and guests to help us maintain Rams Hill as the beautiful place it is. The following are some ways you can help. Fill Divots: Filling divots with enough divot mix helps maintenance crew save time and allows us to do more for golfers and guest. Rake Divots and Footprints in Bunkers: Raking your foot prints and divots in bunkers will allow the next golfers ball to roll smooth with in the bunker and end up on a smooth flat surface for he/she to take an already difficult shot. Fix Ball Marks: Fixing a ball mark does more [...]
Rams Hill Speaks with Golf in Your State Earning the title as "Golf Nomad," Matt Cardis established his footing in golf with many professions: photographer, content creator, travel expert, and entrepreneur. However, the online community knows him best for merging his love for travel and golf into a fresh perspective that showcases the culture of American golf and the "Modern Golfer." And it's called Golf In Your State. Since its inception in the Fall of 2016, Matt has traveled over 100,000 miles, photographed over 300 courses, and connected with thousands of like-minded golfers. He photographs his love for the sport and its culture throughout his travels. Spending nights in parking lots, truck stops, Interstate rest areas, roadside pullouts, and golfers' driveways, he sleeps anywhere he can so he can continue documenting life on the road. In the winter of December 2018, Cardis traveled to our [...]
By Jose Verduzco, Golf Course Superintendent Lower temperatures and shorter days mean it is time to overseed your summer grass. Here in the desert, no grass can stay green and healthy in both summer's heat and winter's low temperatures. Due to this, many homeowners and golf courses overseed with ryegrass. Ryegrass is a cool-season grass that can stay green and healthy from October to June. October has the perfect weather to overseed; temperatures are ideal for fast and even seed germination. The following are some tips for a successful stress-free overseed: Before you drop the seed, you will first have to prepare the seedbed. Scalping is the process of lowering your mowing heights to about 2/3 below the height you ultimately want your lawn to be at. Once scalped, you want to fertilize the lawn by using a complete fertilizer like 15-15-15 before you seed. This [...]

By Jose Verduzco, Golf Course Superintendent Watering in the morning will help maximize water uptake needed for plants to survive the heat. Watering during a heat peak can increase evaporation causing water in the soil to be unavailable for the plant. Prune or trim plants lightly during summer months. By leaving enough foliage to cover the base of a plant, you will prevent sunburn on the stem and other parts needed for plant health. Foliage will also act as insulation to the plant's root zone causing water in the soil to be less prone to evaporation. Prevent over-fertilizing. Over-fertilizing will force the plant to work harder on initiating new growth instead of focusing on surviving a heatwave. Shade cloths will also help with heat stress. Covering plants to prevent direct sun exposure can improve the plant's ability to survive a heatwave. Although this [...]
By Bob Gelesko, Head Golf Professional Hello everyone. This summer is flying by so quickly. I hope everyone is having a great summer hopefully somewhere a little cooler than Borrego Springs. I am picturing some of you playing golf on the coast or in the mountains somewhere that you might need a light jacket in the morning. That sounds soooo good as I type this with it being over 100 degrees outside. Some of the merchandise for the golf shop has been ordered for this upcoming season which will be here before you know it. The golf shop will have a fresh new look this season. Some new fixtures will be added and some new items will be carried this season that haven’t been here before. Mark your calendars with the upcoming member events listed in this newsletter. The Swing Simulator will be available for [...]
By Dennis O'Leary, Front of House Manager Rams Hill is pleased to announce that this season will host at least three themed dinners every week. This is primarily due to the success of last season's Italian Night specials. Plus, we chose to revamp our menu! Throughout the summer, we have been creating and testing out recipes with Sysco Foods in Poway at the test kitchen. We will still offer many of your favorite items with some new additions that we are confident will become your new favorites. In addition to lunch and dinner, we are also adding an appetizer menu to the 19th hole. So whether you're dining with us in the Santa Rosa room, enjoying cocktails by the firepit, or trying appetizers in the 19th hole, we are excited to see old friends and meet new ones. Best, Dennis
This summer, Rams Hill has initiated a golf course landscaping project using Proseed Landscape and Irrigation. The work is centered around the cart path near the second hole's tee boxes and south of its greens, plus down the right side of the third hole. We are keeping landscaping equipment in an area on the property known as Lot 1. Located in proximity to the Vallecitos neighborhood, the area will be fenced and secured. The equipment will enter and exit Lot 1 through the golf course during landscaping hours. Our anticipated completion date will be some time in September. Please continue to stay up to date with our newsletters and social media.
