Tips to Reduce Plant Stress During the Summer

2019-08-06T19:15:52+00:00August 5th, 2019|

By Jose Verduzco, Golf Course Superintendent Watering in the morning will help maximize water uptake needed for plants to survive the heat. Watering during a heat peak can increase evaporation causing water in the soil to be unavailable for the plant. Prune or trim plants lightly during summer months. By leaving enough foliage to cover the base of a plant, you will prevent sunburn on the stem and other parts needed for plant health. Foliage will also act as insulation to the plant's root zone causing water in the soil to be less prone to evaporation. Prevent over-fertilizing. Over-fertilizing will force the plant to work harder on initiating new growth instead of focusing on surviving a heatwave. Shade cloths will also help with heat stress. Covering plants to prevent direct sun exposure can improve the plant's ability to survive a heatwave. Although this [...]

By Bob Gelesko, Head Golf Professional Hello everyone. This summer is flying by so quickly. I hope everyone is having a great summer hopefully somewhere a little cooler than Borrego Springs. I am picturing some of you playing golf on the coast or in the mountains somewhere that you might need a light jacket in the morning. That sounds soooo good as I type this with it being over 100 degrees outside. Some of the merchandise for the golf shop has been ordered for this upcoming season which will be here before you know it. The golf shop will have a fresh new look this season. Some new fixtures will be added and some new items will be carried this season that haven’t been here before. Mark your calendars with the upcoming member events listed in this newsletter. From The Kitchen: An August Update

2019-08-06T19:07:12+00:00August 3rd, 2019|

By Dennis O'Leary, Front of House Manager Rams Hill is pleased to announce that this season will host at least three themed dinners every week. This is primarily due to the success of last season's Italian Night specials. Plus, we chose to revamp our menu! Throughout the summer, we have been creating and testing out recipes with Sysco Foods in Poway at the test kitchen. We will still offer many of your favorite items with some new additions that we are confident will become your new favorites. In addition to lunch and dinner, we are also adding an appetizer menu to the 19th hole. So whether you're dining with us in the Santa Rosa room, enjoying cocktails by the firepit, or trying appetizers in the 19th hole, we are excited to see old friends and meet new ones. Best, Dennis

Golf Course Landscape Enhancement Project

2019-08-06T19:03:57+00:00August 2nd, 2019|

This summer, Rams Hill has initiated a golf course landscaping project using Proseed Landscape and Irrigation. The work is centered around the cart path near the second hole's tee boxes and south of its greens, plus down the right side of the third hole. We are keeping landscaping equipment in an area on the property known as Lot 1. Located in proximity to the Vallecitos neighborhood, the area will be fenced and secured. The equipment will enter and exit Lot 1 through the golf course during landscaping hours. Our anticipated completion date will be some time in September. Please continue to stay up to date with our newsletters and social media.

Harry Turner’s July Message

2019-08-06T19:02:25+00:00August 1st, 2019|

By Harry Turner, COO & GM I hope everyone’s summer is going along nicely. Rams Hill is now entrenched into the heat of summer, but the team is diligently getting ready for the upcoming season. A major landscape project is underway primarily around the tee boxes on hole #2 and all along the entire south side of hole #3. Jose and the turf department are hard at work in preparation of “HOPEFULLY” opening the golf course sometime in October this year. As mentioned to many of you, this will be a game-time decision as it will be dictated on the weather, the condition of our overseed, and the condition of our bentgrass greens. We will keep you informed with our social media and monthly newsletters. On the food and beverage side, Dennis O’Leary is working at completely revamping our menu and food offerings. The upcoming season [...]

6 Reasons Why Golf is Good For You

2019-06-24T15:40:14+00:00June 24th, 2019|

Many people are drawn to golf not only because it is entertaining and relaxing but also because of the health benefits associated with it. From helping players to improve their sleep quality to encouraging new friendships, golf is a sport that can have a positive impact to your life. Here is a list of some of its benefits. 1. Better Sleep Combining exercise with fresh air almost guarantees a good night's sleep. Walking the course and putting muscular effort into swings takes energy. Research has shown that exerting this kind of energy during the day helps you not only fall asleep faster but get a deeper sleep. This is especially true if you play regularly. Good quality sleep allows for muscles to rest and repair. 2. It Stimulates the Brain Regular exercise helps your brain function efficiently. Playing golf improves [...]

Summer Maintenance

2019-05-31T17:19:14+00:00June 2nd, 2019|

By Jose Verduzco, Golf Course Superintendent The grounds crew took a break from landscape cleanup and tree trimming to aerify the greens. Both the ground and air temperatures are ideal for fast recovery on Bentgrass. Aerifying greens will help the greens' roots grow, release toxic gases into the turf, help with mechanical and foot compaction as well as remove organic build-up that can potentially create disease in the plant. Quarter inch tines are used to aerify the greens this time of year. Although the procedure might look invasive, the use of these tines maintains a consistent ball roll on the putting surface. Once done prepping greens for the summer stress, the team will continue with course clean up and prep work for the 2019/2020 season. Thank you and have a great summer! Jose
