The Clash closes season of fun Rams Hill Signature Events

Fredrik Lindblom and Kent Bazemore teamed up to win the gross-score title in The Clash two-player team event over the weekend of May 21-22, 2022. Lindblom-Bazemore carded 64s on both days for a total of 128 — three shots clear of second place. On the net-score side of the leaderboard, the team of Matt Klewein and Jim Yu finished 66-58-124 to edge two other teams by a single shot. Click here for complete scoring. This was the third Rams Hill Signature Event victory for Klewein, who took home the trophy for The Ramateur’s Roadrunner flight in 2020 and 2021.

And speaking of The Ramateur (which, unlike The Clash, is open only to amateur golfers), registration is already under way for the the third installment of Rams Hill’s annual stroke-play tournament to be contested Dec. 3-4, 2022. As always, the field is limited (as is lodging in Borrego Springs) so now is the time to lock up your spot early to experience the friendly competition, fantastic food-and-drink, sweeping desert views and the Rams Hill Experience golfers have come to love. In our second year, The Clash was expanded an extra day with a Friday-night Welcome Pizza Party (hosted by La Jolla’s Wheat + Water, who also provided on-course pizza on Saturday of the tournament) and special invitation into the members-only Borrego Springs Yacht Club. In a truly unique “Rams Hill only” experience, many tournament participants spent the final hour before sunset taking their shots at making a desert ace on one of the storied “ghost holes” from Rams Hill’s original 27-hole layout while others raced remote-controlled boats on the once-upon-a-time water feature.

“The Yacht Club Party really added another fun element to The Clash,” says Rams Hill’s Wil Mayo. “It was another way to bring all the participants together for some pure fun — and offer a glimpse of Rams Hill that the everyday visitor doesn’t get to see. This is the only way for non-members to experience the Yacht Club, so people who are interested should definitely sign up for The Clash in 2023.”

Another highlight of The Clash was that two of the participants played their way onto Rams Hill’s Course Records Leaderboard. Professional golfer and social-media favorite Hannah Gregg posted a 65 from the Red Tees during Saturday’s round while Lindblom tied the current Blue Tees record with a 66.

Rams Hill Signature Events continue to gain a reputation for quality food, drink and prizes. And some of Rams Hill’s favorite brands — many among the biggest names in the golf industry — were on hand for The Clash.

Seamus Golf products once again highlighted the Gift Bags with logo’d leather headcovers and ballmarkers that could be engraved using the company’s signature anvil. Custom bag tags from Bay Wood Makery and T-shirts from Southern California lifestyle brand Ethika (with artwork by San Diego-based Gijo Design) rounded out the welcome goodies along with complimentary Nitro Cold Brew from Good Walk Coffee and assorted cans of Cutwater Spirits (which also sponsored The Clash Putting Green Contest with a bottle of Cutwater Anejo Tequila for the winner.

The annual raffle included framed photographs of Rams Hill’s picturesque par-4 17th and a set of Rams Hill logo’d slate coasters from Bay Wood Makery, plus a Vokey wedge from Titleist, a Rogue driver from Callaway and two Stealth drivers from TaylorMade. And the Grand Prize — as it has been for all four Rams Hill Signature Events to date — was a House on the Hill Stay & Play Package, which was won by Jeff Goldstein.

In addition to the winners’ trophies, The Clash also awarded closest-to-the-pin prizes for all 3-pars each day (and there were some very close shots this year) plus a Full Swing Simulator contest. And new this year — our friends at Short Game Gains provided Accurate Aim Kits for the highest net-scoring team.

What about food, you ask? Rams Hill has upped the eating game with each event. This year’s offerings included the aforementioned Wheat + Water pizza plus Breakfast Burritos and Fresh Fruit each morning, Ram Shack Tacos and Brats, Saturday-night Steak Cookout and Sunday-afternoon Taco Bar — and, of course, Rams Hill’s famous Apple-Caramel Cookies after each round.

“We love putting on events, and we want to make each one special,” says General Manager Harry Turner. “With The Ramateur at the beginning of the season (December) and The Clash to close the season (May), we feel like we offer a little something different with each one — and the Rams Hill team is always working to make each one better than the last.”

Back in December, The Ramateur (played over the weekend of Dec. 4-5, 2021) crowned four champions in the second installment of the event. Evan Galando won a three-way gross-score tiebreaker over Jeff Santoro and Sheldon Roberts with a score of 71-71-142. Tim Owen took home the Bighorn flight trophy with a net score of 69-68-137. Peter Ellison won the Coyote flight with a net score of 67-66-139. And Klewein won the Roadrunner flight with a 69-66-135 net score. Click here for The Ramateur complete scoring.
